Ribosomal protein S16 pseudogene is a nonfunctional genomic sequence that resembles the ribosomal protein S16 gene but does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes arise primarily through duplication or retrotransposition and lose their protein-coding ability due to disabling mutations. The human genome contains many pseudogenes for ribosomal proteins, including S16, scattered throughout various chromosomes. These pseudogenes do not participate in ribosome function or protein synthesis, unlike the functional ribosomal protein S16, which is a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit involved in translation. Although some pseudogenes can, in some cases, exert minor regulatory effects through RNA transcripts, there is no evidence that ribosomal protein S16 pseudogenes play a functional role in cell biology or disease[1][4][5][7].
