Ribosomal protein S16 pseudogene 2 is one of several processed pseudogenes derived from the ribosomal protein S16 (RPS16) gene family. Pseudogenes are non-functional segments of DNA that resemble functional genes but lack the capacity to encode proteins due to disabling mutations or lack of regulatory elements. RPS16P2 does not code for a functional protein and is not involved in any known biological processes or disease pathways. It has no known relevance as a drug target, biomarker, or therapeutic candidate. The existence of RPS16P2 is a result of evolutionary gene duplication and retrotransposition events, with the original functional gene (RPS16) encoding a protein that is a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit essential for protein synthesis[1][3][5][6][9]. Pseudogenes like RPS16P2 are generally transcriptionally inactive and are not considered actionable in therapeutic contexts.
