Overview

Ribosomal protein S16 pseudogene 8 (RPS16P8), also known as RPS16_4_1529, is classified as a processed pseudogene derived from the functional gene that encodes ribosomal protein S16[2][3][5]. Like other ribosomal protein pseudogenes, RPS16P8 arose from reverse transcription and insertion of mRNA and is an intronless, nonfunctional copy dispersed in the genome[2][3][5]. The parent gene, RPS16, encodes a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit, which is essential for protein synthesis[6]. However, RPS16P8 and other S16 pseudogenes do not encode functional proteins and are not involved in protein synthesis, cellular signaling, or disease processes[2][3][5]. There is no evidence that RPS16P8 plays a biological role, participates in disease, or serves as a biomarker or drug target[2][3][5]. Note: While some pseudogenes can be transcribed or have regulatory functions in rare cases, there is no data supporting such a role for RPS16P8; it is classified as an inactive, processed pseudogene in current gene catalogs[2][5].
