Ribosomal protein S17 pseudogene (ENSG00000213068; RPS17P6) is a nonfunctional DNA segment related to the protein-coding RPS17 gene, which encodes a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis. Pseudogenes like RPS17P6 do not produce protein and are usually transcriptionally inactive; however, some pseudogenes may regulate parent gene expression via noncoding RNA mechanisms, such as acting as microRNA decoys or generating small interfering RNAs in rare cases[3][11]. Unlike the functional RPS17 gene, mutations or functions of RPS17P6 are not implicated in disease or therapeutic targeting. The functional RPS17 gene is associated with Diamond-Blackfan anemia, but this does not apply to its pseudogenes[4][7].
