Ribosomal protein S17 pseudogene 9 (RPS17P9) is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome. It is a non-functional genetic element derived from the parental RPS17 gene, which encodes a protein of the 40S ribosomal subunit essential for protein synthesis in cells. Pseudogenes like RPS17P9 typically do not encode functional proteins and have limited or no direct biological activity. They are usually not considered drug targets, biomarkers, or associated with human disease, except in rare cases where pseudogenes may exert regulatory roles; however, no such roles are described for RPS17P9[1][3][4][6][7][8][9]. The parent RPS17 gene is linked to Diamond-Blackfan anemia, but this only pertains to the functional gene, not the pseudogene[5][6][7][8].
