Overview

Ribosomal protein S18 pseudogene 1 (RPS18P1) is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome, corresponding to the functional ribosomal protein S18 gene but lacking protein-coding capability[7][5][8]. Unlike the parent gene (RPS18), which encodes a component of the cytoplasmic 40S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis[1][4], RPS18P1 does not encode a functional protein and is not involved in ribosome formation or cellular protein synthesis. The presence of such pseudogenes is common for ribosomal protein genes, often resulting from gene duplication and retrotransposition events[3][7]. Pseudogenes like RPS18P1 may occasionally be transcribed, but their transcripts and any potential peptides are typically considered nonfunctional byproducts without biological significance[11]. There is no evidence or consensus supporting RPS18P1 as a therapeutic or diagnostic target in human disease or as a biomarker.
