The human genome contains numerous ribosomal protein pseudogenes, with RPS18 having at least 12 identified pseudogene copies including RPS18P12[6][9]. The functional RPS18 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that belongs to the S13P family and is located in the cytoplasm as part of the 40S ribosomal subunit[5]. However, RPS18P12 itself does not encode a functional protein and is not considered a therapeutic target. The pseudogene has the NCBI Gene ID 388339 and Ensembl ID ENSG00000230897[2][4].
