Ribosomal protein S18 pseudogene 14 (RPS18P14) is one of numerous processed pseudogenes derived from the ribosomal protein S18 gene (RPS18), which encodes a protein component of the 40S ribosomal subunit in eukaryotic cells[10][11][5][8]. Pseudogenes like RPS18P14 are generally non-functional stretches of DNA resembling functional genes but lacking the ability to encode active protein due to mutations or truncations acquired during evolution[5][8]. While some pseudogenes exert regulatory roles, there is no evidence that RPS18P14 has any such function. The canonical, protein-coding version of the gene (RPS18) is essential for ribosome assembly and protein synthesis, and disruptions to its function can result in diseases such as Diamond-Blackfan anemia[10].
