Overview

The ribosomal protein S2 pseudogene (ENSG00000225475) is a non-functional genomic sequence resembling the ribosomal protein S2 gene but has accumulated disabling mutations that prevent the production of a functional protein. Pseudogenes may arise from gene duplication events or retrotransposition, and are generally considered evolutionary remnants. Some pseudogenes in the human genome have been reported to play roles in gene regulation, but the majority—including the ribosomal protein S2 pseudogene—have no known physiological or pathological significance and are not used as therapeutic or diagnostic targets[1][3][4].
