Overview

Ribosomal protein S2 pseudogene 18 (RPS2P18) is one of many processed pseudogenes of the ribosomal protein S2 (RPS2) gene in the human genome[2][7]. It is a non-coding genomic sequence that originated from a duplication and retrotransposition event of the functional RPS2 gene, which encodes a structural protein of the 40S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis[7][1][3]. RPS2P18 lacks the necessary regulatory and coding elements to produce a functional protein; therefore, it does not play a direct biological role and is not associated with any established therapeutic relevance or drug interactions. Pseudogenes like RPS2P18 are generally considered non-functional relics of evolution, though some can play regulatory roles in rare cases. There is no evidence that RPS2P18 is associated with disease, drug response, or utility as a biomarker[2][7]. RPS2P18 should not be confused with the functional ribosomal protein S2 (RPS2), which is an actual protein-coding gene and part of the ribosome complex[1][3]. RPS2P18 is not a receptor, enzyme, or therapeutic target.
