Overview

Ribosomal protein S2 pseudogene 45 (RPS2P45) is a human processed pseudogene, most likely originating from retrotransposition of the mRNA from the functional RPS2 gene, which encodes a protein of the 40S ribosomal subunit. RPS2P45 does not produce a functional protein, typically contains disablements like frameshifts or premature stop codons, and may show sequence homology to RPS2. While some pseudogenes are transcribed and may generate regulatory noncoding RNAs, there is no reported functional or disease relevance for RPS2P45. The classification as a pseudogene is supported by genomic and evolutionary analysis, indicating that such elements are primarily remnants of gene duplication and retrotransposition events.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable; pseudogenes do not encode functional protein or receptor targets for drug action

03

Biological functions

Potentially contributes noncoding RNA transcripts that may regulate the expression of homologous coding genes via RNA interference (RNAi) mechanisms in some cases, based on general pseudogene biology. No known protein coding or catalytic activity.
04

Disease associations

No direct disease role known for RPS2P45 specifically; functional RPS2 and some ribosomal protein pseudogenes are broadly studied in cancer and other diseases, but the pseudogene itself is not established in any disease process.
