Ribosomal protein S20 pseudogene 33 (RPS20P33) is a processed pseudogene derived from the RPS20 gene, which encodes a component of the small (40S) ribosomal subunit. Pseudogenes like RPS20P33 arise from the reverse transcription and genomic integration of RNA transcripts from protein-coding genes but typically lack regulatory elements or contain disabling mutations that prevent them from encoding a functional protein. The human genome contains many ribosomal protein pseudogenes, which reflect the high expression and evolutionary conservation of ribosomal proteins. RPS20P33, as a pseudogene, is not translated into a protein and does not participate in cellular functions or disease processes directly.
