As a pseudogene, RPS20P9 does not encode a functional protein and is considered non-coding. It does not have a known direct biological function, disease association, or therapeutic relevance. Pseudogenes like RPS20P9 arise from duplication or retrotransposition of functional ribosomal protein genes and generally accumulate disabling mutations, preventing the production of active protein. RPS20P9 is one of many ribosomal protein pseudogenes distributed throughout the genome[2][5][7][8].
