Ribosomal protein S23 pseudogene

Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene)
01

Overview

The ribosomal protein S23 pseudogene is a **non-coding genomic sequence** derived from the processing and insertion of mRNA from the ribosomal protein S23 gene (RPS23) back into the genome. While the functional RPS23 gene encodes a component of the small (40S) ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells[1][3][5][6], the pseudogene itself does **not produce a functional protein**. Pseudogenes such as this one are common for ribosomal protein genes and are dispersed throughout the genome[5][6]. There is no evidence that this pseudogene has a direct role in health or disease, and it is not a therapeutic target nor a candidate biomarker in current scientific literature[3][5][6].
