Ribosomal protein S23 pseudogene 1 (RPS23P1) is a processed pseudogene in humans derived from the ribosomal protein S23 gene, which encodes a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis. Unlike its parent gene, RPS23P1 does not produce a functional protein and is one of many ribosomal protein pseudogenes dispersed throughout the human genome. In mice, a related retroposed gene (Rps23rg1) is functionally expressed and has been implicated in regulation of β-amyloid levels and tau phosphorylation—key features of Alzheimer’s disease pathology—but this function does not extend to the human pseudogene, which is considered non-coding and non-functional. The human RPS23P1 is not considered a therapeutic target and has no known direct biological functions or disease roles. The naming is sometimes confused with the mouse retroposed gene Rps23rg1, which is a functional gene, but human RPS23P1 does not contribute to biological processes, disease roles, or drug interactions.
