Overview

Ribosomal protein S23 pseudogene 10 (RPS23P10) is a processed pseudogene located on chromosome 1 (cytogenetic region 1q23.3). As a processed pseudogene, it was derived from the mRNA of the functional ribosomal protein S23 gene by retrotransposition and subsequently lost protein-coding ability due to disabling mutations. RPS23P10 does not produce a functional ribosomal protein and there is no evidence of significant transcription or function. Such pseudogenes exist throughout the genome—over 2,000 ribosomal protein pseudogenes have been identified in humans, serving mainly as genomic fossils without known cellular activity or clinical relevance. Functional ribosomal protein S23 (RPS23) gene encodes a genuine ribosomal protein (component of the 40S ribosomal subunit); RPS23P10 merely shares sequence similarity but lacks function. Many ribosomal protein genes have numerous processed pseudogenes in the genome due to retrotransposition/duplication over evolutionary time. Pseudogenes generally do not encode active proteins and are not considered actionable or therapeutic targets in drug development or disease research. There is no evidence for RPS23P10 being transcribed or linked to disease mechanisms.
