Overview

Ribosomal protein S23 pseudogene 4 is a processed (retroposed) pseudogene that was formed by reverse transcription of RPS23 mRNA and integration back into the genome without introns. Unlike the parent gene RPS23, which encodes a structural protein in the ribosomal 40S subunit crucial for translation, RPS23P4 does not produce functional protein and is generally transcriptionally inactive. Although processed pseudogenes like RPS23P4 populate the human and rodent genomes due to frequent retroposition of ribosomal protein genes, they are not considered therapeutic or diagnostic targets and hold little direct biological or clinical significance. The parent gene, RPS23, has important roles in translation and genetic diseases, but pseudogenes like RPS23P4 do not participate in these functions. In research, some pseudogenes are studied for possible regulatory roles, but there is no evidence RPS23P4 has such a role. Disease associations, drug interactions, and relevance as a biomarker pertain only to functional protein-coding genes, not to pseudogenes such as RPS23P4.
