Overview

RPS24P16 (ribosomal protein S24 pseudogene 16) is a processed pseudogene derived from duplication of the RPS24 gene, which encodes ribosomal protein S24, a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit responsible for catalyzing protein synthesis[4][6]. Pseudogenes are nonfunctional sequences that closely resemble functional genes but lack the ability to encode a protein product. RPS24P16 does not contribute to ribosome function and has no known biological or disease role in humans. Unlike its functional counterpart RPS24, which is associated with ribosome biogenesis and implicated in Diamond-Blackfan anemia, RPS24P16 exists as part of the genomic landscape of pseudogenes found throughout the human genome. It is not considered a therapeutic target or biomarker.
