Ribosomal protein S24 pseudogene 18 (RPS24P18)

Target
RPS24P18
Molecular classification
Other (pseudogene), derived from the ribosomal protein family
01

Overview

Ribosomal protein S24 pseudogene 18 is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome. It is among many pseudogenes derived from the ribosomal protein S24 gene, which encodes a structural protein of the 40S ribosomal subunit—a key component in cellular protein synthesis. Pseudogenes do not produce functional proteins but may occasionally play regulatory roles. There is no evidence of RPS24P18 having functional significance or acting as a drug target. Most research and clinical interest is on the parental RPS24 gene, whose mutations can cause Diamond-Blackfan anemia, not the pseudogene.

02

Biological functions

Other (no known direct biological function; pseudogenes generally do not encode proteins, but some may have regulatory effects on gene expression—there is no evidence for such a function for RPS24P18)
03

Disease associations

Other (no disease relevance reported for RPS24P18; however, mutations in the functional RPS24 gene can cause Diamond-Blackfan anemia, but that is unrelated to the pseudogene)
