Ribosomal protein S26 pseudogene 15 (RPS26P15) is a processed pseudogene derived from the gene encoding ribosomal protein S26 (RPS26). Pseudogenes are DNA sequences similar to known genes but are non-functional; they often arise from duplication or retrotransposition of a parental gene and can sometimes be used in genomic research or as genetic markers, but they do not code for active proteins or have known therapeutic relevance. Unlike protein-coding genes, pseudogenes like RPS26P15 do not produce functional proteins and typically lack biological functions. RPS26P15 is not associated with any known disease, is not implicated as a drug target, and has no current relevance in clinical therapeutics or biomarker development. The functional parental gene, RPS26, encodes a protein component of the 40S ribosomal subunit and mutations in RPS26 are implicated in Diamond-Blackfan anemia, but this does not apply to its pseudogenes.
