However, RPS26P20 is not transcribed into a functional protein, nor is it involved in ribosome assembly or protein synthesis. Pseudogenes like RPS26P20 generally arise during evolution through duplication or reverse transcription of the original gene and subsequent accumulation of disabling mutations.
