RPS26P20 (Ribosomal protein S26 pseudogene 20) is a processed pseudogene located in the human genome and shares extensive sequence similarity with the protein-coding gene RPS26, which encodes a critical component of the 40S ribosomal subunit. However, RPS26P20 is not transcribed into a functional protein, nor is it involved in ribosome assembly or protein synthesis. Pseudogenes like RPS26P20 generally arise during evolution through duplication or reverse transcription of the original gene and subsequent accumulation of disabling mutations. They are genomically annotated for historical and comparative genetic purposes but are neither utilized in therapeutic targeting nor considered biologically active in the protein sense.
