Ribosomal protein S26 pseudogene 54 (RPS26P54) is a processed pseudogene related to the RPS26 gene, which encodes the 40S ribosomal protein S26, a component of the small ribosomal subunit essential for protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells. Pseudogene 54, like other RPS26 pseudogenes, does not produce a functional protein due to sequence mutations or lack of regulatory elements, and is not involved in protein synthesis or other biological processes[1][3][7]. Pseudogenes are generally considered non-functional genomic DNA segments arising from duplication or retrotransposition events, and while some may acquire regulatory roles, there is no evidence that RPS26P54 has any such function. The functional human gene is called Ribosomal protein S26 (RPS26), which is a protein-coding gene involved in ribosome structure and function and associated with Diamond-Blackfan anemia when mutated[1][2][3][7][6].
