Ribosomal protein S26 pseudogene 57 (RPS26P57) is one of many processed pseudogenes derived from the ribosomal protein S26 (RPS26) gene. Pseudogenes typically arise through genomic duplication or retrotransposition events and do not encode functional proteins. RPS26P57 itself does not produce a protein and therefore does not participate in the canonical biological functions associated with the functional ribosomal protein S26 gene. There is no evidence supporting a role for RPS26P57 as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or any involvement in human disease. In contrast, the functional RPS26 gene is essential for ribosome biogenesis, protein synthesis, and is involved in the inherited disease Diamond-Blackfan anemia. However, RPS26P57 as a pseudogene has no established biological function or disease relevance.
