Ribosomal protein S27 pseudogenes, such as RPS27AP5, are non-functional copies or processed genomic remnants of the active ribosomal protein S27 gene (RPS27), which encodes a component of the 40S small ribosomal subunit[1][5]. While the parent gene RPS27 is essential for ribosome function and linked to cell proliferation and cancer biology[5], its pseudogenes are generally considered transcriptionally inactive or unable to produce functional proteins. However, some recent studies suggest that specific pseudogenes can occasionally be transcribed or generate protein variants indistinguishable from the parent protein, but these instances are rare and the biological impact is not established for therapeutic purposes[1]. RPS27 pseudogenes are not considered therapeutic targets and have no known aliases, drugs, or biomarker functions relevant for drug development.
