Ribosomal protein S27 pseudogene 17 (RPS27P17) is a non-coding genomic sequence derived from the protein-coding RPS27 gene but does not produce any functional protein. Pseudogenes such as RPS27P17 are essentially remnants of ancestral genes that have accumulated mutations rendering them non-functional. There is no evidence that RPS27P17 acts as a therapeutic target, encodes active protein, or plays a direct role in human disease. The protein-coding parent gene, RPS27, is a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit and plays a role in protein synthesis, DNA repair, and oncogenesis, but these properties do not apply to its pseudogene RPS27P17[7][3][1][2].
