Overview

Ribosomal protein S27 pseudogene 28 (RPS27P28) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome, derived from the gene encoding ribosomal protein S27 (RPS27). Like most processed pseudogenes, it does not produce a functional protein and has no known biological, molecular, or disease-related activity. Multiple such pseudogenes exist for ribosomal proteins throughout the genome as a result of the retrotransposition process, where mRNA is copied back into DNA and inserted into new genomic locations, but the resulting pseudogene generally lacks coding capacity or functional role. The functional relevance of RPS27P28 has not been established, and it is not considered a therapeutic target or biomarker. Any references to ribosomal protein S27 as a therapeutic or disease-associated protein refer to the functional gene RPS27, not this pseudogene.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (pseudogene, not a molecular target)

03

Biological functions

None ascribed; pseudogenes generally do not encode functional proteinsOccasionally, some pseudogenes can have regulatory RNA functions, but such a role is not documented for RPS27P28
04

Disease associations

No known direct disease role; functional RPS27 gene (not this pseudogene) is associated with cancer and Diamond-Blackfan anemia, but these do not apply to RPS27P28
05

Safety considerations

Not applicable
06

Interacting drugs

None (no products or therapeutics are known to interact with this pseudogene)
07

Biomarkers

None known for RPS27P28 (unlike the parent RPS27 gene, which is overexpressed in certain cancers)
