RPS27A pseudogene 18 (RPS27AP18) is a processed pseudogene derived from the RPS27A gene, which normally encodes a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis. Pseudogenes such as RPS27AP18 generally arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition and lack evidence of protein-coding capacity or biological function. While some RPS27A pseudogenes (such as RPS27AP5) can produce functional protein variants with potentially novel regulatory roles, there is no evidence that RPS27AP18 is ever expressed or translates into a protein in humans. It is not considered a therapeutic target or a biologically active receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor. Its presence in the genome is mainly of academic interest for evolutionary genomics.
