Overview

Ribosomal protein S27a pseudogene 6 (RPS27AP6) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome. It is homologous to the functional ribosomal protein S27a gene (RPS27A), which encodes a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis. However, as a pseudogene, RPS27AP6 does not produce a functional protein product and is not considered a direct participant in any known biological or disease process. There is currently no evidence that RPS27AP6 serves as a therapeutic target, a biomarker, or has any diagnostic or safety relevance in medicine. Pseudogenes like RPS27AP6 are gene copies that have lost the ability to code for a functional protein, typically through mutation or truncation. While the parent gene (RPS27A) is important for translation and cellular regulation, no such function is ascribed to RPS27AP6. Some pseudogenes can have regulatory functions (e.g., siRNA generation or microRNA sponges), but no such function has been documented for RPS27AP6. When evaluating targets for drug discovery, only functional protein-coding genes (not pseudogenes) are considered true therapeutic targets, unless there is specific evidence of biological activity. RPS27AP6 is a pseudogene and not a direct therapeutic target, nor does it have recognized biological or disease functions. The entry is generally considered "incorrect" for the purposes of target development or pharmacological relevance.
