Overview

Ribosomal protein S28 pseudogene 7 (RPS28P7) is a processed human pseudogene related to the functional ribosomal protein S28 gene (RPS28). While it does not encode a protein, its RNA is expressed and may act as a non-coding regulatory RNA, particularly influencing parental RPS28 gene expression by serving as a molecular 'sponge' for microRNAs. This mechanism may increase ribosomal protein S28 levels and has been linked with poor prognosis in pancreatic cancer. Currently, RPS28P7 is not an established therapeutic target, but its expression may serve as a prognostic biomarker in cancer biology[1][2][7].

02

Mechanism of action

Hypothetically, RNA-targeted therapies such as small molecules, RNA interference, or RNA editing that degrade/inhibit RPS28P7 mRNA could restore miRNA-mediated suppression of parental RPS28 expression[7]

03

Biological functions

Acts as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) by sponging miRNAs that regulate the parental gene RPS28, potentially modulating protein expression indirectly[7]
04

Disease associations

Cancer (Upregulation is associated with poor prognosis in pancreatic cancer patients; may contribute to increased protein synthesis demand in tumors)[7]Other (Potential prognostic marker in lethal cases of pancreatic cancer)[7]
05

Safety considerations

None directly established, but modulating pseudogenes may have unanticipated effects on parental gene regulation and global translation[7]
06

Biomarkers

RPS28P7 upregulation is proposed as a biomarker predicting lethal status (poorer overall survival) in pancreatic cancer[7]
