Ribosomal protein S29 pseudogene (ENSG00000219928) is a non-coding DNA segment with sequence similarity to the functional gene encoding ribosomal protein S29 (RPS29)[9][8][11]. Pseudogenes are typically products of gene duplication or retrotransposition events but lack protein-coding capability due to sequence errors, regulatory defects, or truncation[11]. The parent gene, RPS29, is a component of the small (40S) ribosomal subunit and plays a critical role in protein synthesis and ribosome biogenesis[1][5]; pseudogenes, in contrast, are generally inactive and not expressed. The human genome contains many processed ribosomal protein pseudogenes, which formed during evolution but serve no known direct biological function[11]. Pseudogenes may be mistakenly annotated as protein-coding in some older datasets but, in general, should be excluded from therapeutic target consideration unless proven otherwise.
