Ribosomal protein S29 pseudogene 16 is a processed pseudogene derived from the ribosomal protein S29 gene (RPS29), meaning that while its DNA sequence resembles that of the functional gene, it does not encode a functional protein and is not typically transcribed within the cell. Pseudogenes like RPS29P16 are numerous in the human genome and are considered non-coding elements without known protein-coding capacity or direct biological function. The functional RPS29 gene is essential for ribosome function and protein synthesis, and mutations in the functional gene are associated with Diamond-Blackfan anemia, but RPS29P16 itself has no known role in disease, molecular pathways, or relevance as a drug target[2][5].
