Overview

Ribosomal protein S29 pseudogene 28 (RPS29P28) is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome that is derived from the functional ribosomal protein S29 gene (RPS29)[4][9][11]. Pseudogenes like RPS29P28 resemble their parent protein-coding genes in sequence but contain disabling mutations (such as frameshifts or premature stop codons) that prevent them from producing functional proteins[11]. RPS29P28 thus does not encode a functional ribosomal protein, is not transcribed into an active protein or RNA product with biological activity, and is not considered a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or any functional molecule in disease or pharmacology[4][11]. The existence of multiple ribosomal protein pseudogenes is common in the human genome, resulting primarily from retrotransposition events[11]. According to authoritative gene databases, there is no evidence that RPS29P28 is expressed or has clinical, pharmacological, or biomarker relevance[4][9][11]. In contrast, the functional parent gene (RPS29) is critical for ribosome function and mutations in RPS29 are associated with Diamond-Blackfan anemia and other disorders[6][7][10], but pseudogenes derived from RPS29, such as RPS29P28, do not share these associations. Therefore, if your intent is to identify a functional or druggable protein/receptor, RPS29P28 should not be considered a valid target[4][11].
