Overview

Ribosomal protein S3A pseudogene 42 (RPS3AP42) is a retrotransposed, non-functional copy ("retrocopied pseudogene") of the ribosomal protein S3A (RPS3A) gene. Located on human chromosome 20, RPS3AP42 lacks protein-coding capability due to either disabling mutations or lack of necessary regulatory elements. Processed pseudogenes such as RPS3AP42 are widely distributed throughout the genome as remnants of evolutionary events but are not expressed as proteins and do not serve as drug or therapeutic targets. Their only potential relevance is as markers of evolutionary history or in rare cases as regulators of gene expression, but no such role has been specifically attributed to RPS3AP42. The parental gene RPS3A encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S ribosomal subunit, which has roles in protein synthesis. Processed pseudogenes are plentiful in the human genome, particularly from highly-expressed housekeeping genes such as ribosomal proteins. RPS3AP42 is a typical processed (retrotransposed) pseudogene with no known function and is not recognized as a receptor, enzyme, or druggable target. RPS3AP42 is validly described as a processed pseudogene with no therapeutic, biomarker, or drug interaction relevance. It does not function as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or any druggable molecular target.
