RPS3A pseudogene 44 (RPS3AP44) is a noncoding processed pseudogene, also described as a retrocopy, derived from the ribosomal protein S3a (RPS3A) gene[7]. It is located at chromosome 18:33822451-33823257 in the human genome[7]. Retrocopies like RPS3AP44 are generated through reverse transcription and reintegration of mRNA from a parental gene, in this case, RPS3A, but typically lack promoter and regulatory sequences necessary for normal gene expression and are generally nonfunctional. There are numerous processed pseudogenes of ribosomal proteins scattered throughout the genome, and most do not encode functional proteins or serve as direct therapeutic targets[4][7]. No known biological function, disease association, or pharmacological relevance has been attributed to RPS3AP44. RPS3A is an important ribosomal protein for 40S ribosomal subunit assembly and function[3][5]. RPS3AP44 is a nonfunctional evolutionary byproduct and is not a therapeutic target[7][4]. Processed pseudogenes are sometimes studied for their role in gene evolution or as potential regulators via noncoding RNA, but none of these roles have been established for RPS3AP44.
