Overview

Ribosomal protein S3a pseudogene 52 (RPS3AP52) is one of many processed pseudogenes derived from the ribosomal protein S3a gene. As a pseudogene, RPS3AP52 does not encode a functional ribosomal protein and lacks protein-coding ability. Pseudogenes like RPS3AP52 may regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally, for example by acting as decoys for microRNAs or RNA-binding proteins. While altered expression or copy number variation in specific cancer types has been noted for various pseudogenes, the exact biological and clinical significance of RPS3AP52 remains undefined. There are no known drugs targeting this pseudogene, and it is not considered a therapeutic target. RPS3AP52 is used mainly for research purposes and molecular biology studies on pseudogene function and regulation.

Biological functions

Modulation of gene expression through potential roles as a noncoding RNA, e.g., acting as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) or microRNA sponge, which may impact the regulation of the parental RPS3A gene and other genes in trans

Disease associations

Other (Pseudogene alterations, including copy number changes and expression differences, have been described in various cancers, but the specific biological effect of RPS3AP52 remains unknown. There is no established direct causal disease role.)

Biomarkers

Pseudogenes, including members of this family, are sometimes explored as biomarkers for disease prognosis and diagnosis, but no specific clinical application is described for RPS3AP52
