Ribosomal protein S3A pseudogene 55 (RPS3AP55)

Target
RPS3AP55
Molecular classification
Other (processed pseudogene; not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, ion channel, transcription factor, or similar protein family[6])
01

Overview

RPS3AP55 is a processed pseudogene derived from the ribosomal protein S3A gene (RPS3A). Pseudogenes are DNA sequences that resemble known protein-coding genes but often contain mutations, deletions, or insertions that prevent them from encoding a functional protein[6]. RPS3AP55, like other pseudogenes of ribosomal proteins, is typically considered non-functional at the protein level. Processed pseudogenes usually result from reverse transcription events and subsequent genomic integration. While emerging evidence suggests some pseudogenes may be transcribed as RNA and exert gene regulatory roles, there is no specific evidence that RPS3AP55 has any biological function or medical relevance. Its parent gene, RPS3A, is a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit, and is essential for protein synthesis and cell function, but the pseudogene itself does not participate in these processes[1][3][6].

Biological functions

Other (no protein product/function; processed pseudogenes may sometimes have regulatory roles at the RNA level or serve as non-coding RNA, but this is generally unproven and uncharacterized for RPS3AP55[6])
03

Disease associations

Other (no established disease roles; canonical diseases are linked to the parent RPS3A gene, not its pseudogenes[3])
