Ribosomal protein S4 X-linked (RPS4X) is a structural protein that forms part of the small (40S) subunit of the cytoplasmic ribosome, which is responsible for catalyzing protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells[1][5]. RPS4X is encoded on the X chromosome, with a functionally equivalent isoform, RPS4Y, on the Y chromosome; the proteins are not identical but serve similar roles. RPS4X is involved in ribosome biogenesis, translation, and cell proliferation[1][2][5]. Beyond its canonical functions, RPS4X modulates cell cycle progression, interacts with oncogenic proteins (e.g., Y-box binding protein-1 and MDM2), and its abundance is linked to disease phenotypes in cancer and Turner syndrome[1][3][5]. Recent studies implicate RPS4X, and related peptides encoded by lncRNAs, in inhibiting pathological cell proliferation and modulating cellular responses to hypoxia and viral infection[1]. Mutations or altered expression of RPS4X are associated with a spectrum of human diseases, primarily those involving abnormal chromosomal dosage or cellular stress response pathways[1][5].
