Overview

Ribosomal protein S4X pseudogene 12 (RPS4XP12) is a pseudogene—a genomic DNA sequence similar to a functional gene but generally non-functional in terms of encoding an active protein[3][5]. It is designated “psuedogene” because it does not produce a functional ribosomal protein and is one of several processed pseudogenes related to the functional ribosomal protein S4, X-linked gene (RPS4X). Pseudogenes like RPS4XP12 are not considered therapeutic targets, have no protein product, and are not associated with cellular or therapeutic mechanisms, disease involvement, or drug interactions[2][3][5]. There is no evidence of an active role in normal biology or pathology, and there is no report of use as a biomarker or drug interaction partner. While the functional gene RPS4X (Ribosomal protein S4, X-linked) is a vital component of the ribosomal small subunit and is involved in protein synthesis with associations to Turner syndrome and other conditions, RPS4XP12 is a non-coding, non-functional pseudogene variant, which simply shares sequence homology with RPS4X but does not produce protein or exert biological effects[2][3][5].
