ribosomal protein S4X pseudogene 17 (RPS4XP17)

Target
RPS4XP17
Molecular classification
Other, Pseudogene
01

Overview

Ribosomal protein S4X pseudogene 17 (RPS4XP17) is a genomic sequence homologous to the functional ribosomal protein S4 gene located on the X chromosome but is a non-coding pseudogene. Unlike the active genes encoding ribosomal protein S4X (RPS4X) and its Y-linked counterpart (RPS4Y), RPS4XP17 does not produce a functional protein and has no direct biological or disease-related activity[6][9]. Pseudogenes are common for ribosomal protein gene families due to genomic duplications and retrotransposition, but the majority remain transcriptionally silent and are not involved in regulation, disease, or as drug targets[6].
