Ribosomal protein S5 pseudogene 7, abbreviated as RPS5P7, is a processed pseudogene in the human genome derived from the parental RPS5 gene, which encodes a structural component of the eukaryotic 40S ribosomal subunit[1][7]. RPS5P7 does not encode a functional protein. Like other ribosomal protein pseudogenes, it may play a regulatory role through RNA-based mechanisms, such as acting as a source of short interfering RNAs that regulate the expression of its parent gene, or by serving as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA), modulating microRNA availability[8]. Such pseudogenes are abundant for ribosomal protein genes due to their high expression and retrotransposition frequency[6]. While RPS5 and its coding variants are implicated in ribosome function and cancer, RPS5P7 itself has no direct targetable function, no known drug interactions, and is not used as a biomarker, though it could potentially influence ribosomal protein gene expression and related cellular processes via indirect network effects.
