Overview

Ribosomal protein S5 pseudogene 8 (RPS5P8) represents a processed pseudogene in the human genome derived from the parent gene *RPS5*, which encodes the 40S ribosomal protein S5—a structural component of the ribosome involved in protein synthesis. RPS5P8 itself does not encode a functional protein and generally lacks coding potential due to disabling mutations typical of pseudogenes. Although pseudogenes like RPS5P8 do not produce active proteins, research suggests that some ribosomal protein pseudogenes can have regulatory roles, such as generating non-coding RNAs that modulate the expression of their parent ribosomal protein genes through mechanisms like RNA interference or functioning as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs). There is currently no evidence that RPS5P8 functions as a drug/therapeutic target, nor is it directly implicated in any diseases or used as a biomarker. The broader class of ribosomal protein pseudogenes may contribute indirectly to biological processes like cellular stress adaptation and synaptic plasticity through the regulation of protein synthesis, but specific roles for RPS5P8 have not been described.
