Overview

Ribosomal protein S6 pseudogene 16 is a processed pseudogene in the human genome related to the functional ribosomal protein S6 gene. Unlike the parental RPS6 gene, which encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein involved in the 40S ribosomal subunit and protein synthesis, RPS6P16 does not code for a functional protein. Pseudogenes such as RPS6P16 arise via gene duplication or retrotransposition and are characterized by their lack of protein-coding capability. No evidence suggests a direct role for RPS6P16 in disease, drug interactions, or cellular pathways.
