Ribosomal protein S6 pseudogene 20 (RPS6P20) is a non-functional, processed pseudogene related to the ribosomal protein S6 gene. As with most pseudogenes, it is a product of retrotransposition, containing sequence similarities to its parent coding gene but interrupted by disablements such as insertions, deletions, or premature stop codons, preventing translation into a functional protein[2][5]. RPS6P20 is listed as a pseudogene with the NCBI Gene accession 100271262; it is not a functional protein-coding gene[2]. Human ribosomal protein pseudogenes are numerous and generally reflect the evolutionary history of the genome rather than essential biological roles[5]. Most are not transcribed or translated. A small minority of pseudogenes exert gene regulatory roles; however, there is no evidence that RPS6P20 has any established function, regulatory or otherwise, in human biology[2][5]. The ribosomal protein S6 gene (RPS6) is functional and encodes a component of the small 40S ribosomal subunit involved in translation and cell growth. RPS6P20, however, lacks this functionality[1][3].
