Ribosomal protein S6 pseudogene 22 (RPS6P22) is a processed pseudogene related to the ribosomal protein S6 (RPS6) gene. It is not capable of coding for a functional protein due to mutations, deletions, or loss of regulatory elements required for normal gene expression[2][12]. Like other processed pseudogenes, RPS6P22 arose through retrotransposition, incorporating an mRNA-derived sequence back into the genome without the necessary promoter and intron-exon structure for normal gene function. While most pseudogenes are non-functional, some can be transcribed and may play regulatory roles by influencing the expression of related genes, particularly by serving as microRNA decoys or producing non-coding RNAs[2]. RPS6P22 itself is not a designated therapeutic target, does not produce a protein, and does not act as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor. It has no direct role in pharmacology, disease, or biomarker discovery, although the broader class of pseudogenes is increasingly recognized for possible regulatory functions in disease contexts[2].
