Ribosomal protein S9 pseudogene 4 (RPS9P4) is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome. Unlike its parental gene (RPS9), which encodes a ribosomal protein involved in protein synthesis, RPS9P4 is considered nonfunctional: it does not produce a protein product due to disrupted coding sequences or regulatory elements. Pseudogenes such as RPS9P4 arise from duplication or retrotransposition events and are common in the human genome. They are generally regarded as "junk DNA," but can, in specific cases for some pseudogenes, exert minor regulatory effects; no such role is described for RPS9P4. Importantly, RPS9P4 is not considered a valid drug target in pharmacology or biomedical research and may confound genetic studies due to sequence homology with its parent gene.
