Overview

Ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 16 (RPSAP16) is a **processed pseudogene** derived from the functional ribosomal protein SA (RPSA) gene. While the RPSA gene encodes a multifunctional protein involved in ribosomal assembly and cell surface receptor activity, its pseudogenes (including RPSAP16) are largely nonfunctional, lacking protein-coding potential due to mutations such as premature stop codons or lack of start codons. Pseudogenes like RPSAP16 are typically not translated into proteins and are not considered drug targets, receptors, or direct therapeutic agents. There is no evidence that RPSAP16 encodes a functional protein, plays a key role in biological pathways, or is associated with human disease roles. Its primary relevance is in genomics as a confounding factor in the study of the functional RPSA gene, due to sequence similarity that can interfere with genetic and transcriptomic assays[5].
