Overview

Ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 20 (RPSAP20) is a member of the RPSA gene family and is categorized as a processed pseudogene, not a protein-coding gene[7]. Pseudogenes like RPSAP20 are segments of DNA resembling normal genes but are generally regarded as nonfunctional due to accumulated mutations and lack of protein-coding potential. The canonical, functional gene in this family, RPSA, encodes the 40S ribosomal protein SA, which also serves as a laminin receptor involved in processes like protein translation, cell adhesion, cancer metastasis, and pathogen interactions[3][7]. However, RPSAP20 itself does not produce a protein product and is not considered a therapeutic target, nor does it have any known role in disease or drug interaction. Transcripts from some RPSA pseudogenes have been detected in various tissues in certain species and may have regulatory or non-coding RNA functions, but there is no evidence that RPSAP20 has a functional or pathogenic role in humans or other organisms[7].
