Overview

Ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 21 (RPSAP21) is one of several processed pseudogenes related to the *RPSA* gene, which encodes the functional ribosomal protein SA (also known as the 37/67 kDa laminin receptor). The functional RPSA protein has important roles in ribosome assembly, cell surface receptor activity, and disease processes like cancer and infection[3][5]. However, RPSAP21 is not a functional protein-coding gene: as a processed pseudogene, it is a non-functional remnant of gene duplication/retrotransposition events and does not encode an active protein or serve as a drug target[5]. Pseudogenes like RPSAP21 may occasionally be transcribed as non-coding RNA but generally lack protein-coding capacity and do not have biological activity comparable to their parent gene[5]. The *RPSA* gene (not its pseudogenes) is sometimes referred to as the laminin receptor and participates in cell adhesion, cancer metastasis, and pathogen entry[3][5]. The functional RPSA gene has a single full-length, protein-coding gene in most species, with multiple pseudogenes of variable sequence and no known direct disease associations or therapeutically relevant function for any pseudogene[5].
