Ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 31 (RPSAP31) is a pseudogene related to the gene encoding ribosomal protein SA. Pseudogenes are sequences similar to functional genes but typically non-functional due to disabling mutations such as premature stop codons, frame shifts, or absence of promoter elements[7][9]. The authentic ribosomal protein SA gene (RPSA) encodes a protein that is part of the 40S ribosomal subunit and acts as a multifunctional protein, including roles as a receptor for laminin and involvement in processes such as translation, cell adhesion, infection, and cancer progression[3][5][7]. However, RPSAP31, as a pseudogene, does not produce a functional protein and is not regarded as a therapeutic target or receptor in drug development[7][9]. The family of RPSA pseudogenes is large, and most variants lack essential coding capacity for functional protein products[7][9]. Only very rare pseudogenes in this family potentially encode near-complete proteins, but RPSAP31 is not among those with documented functional capacity. For this reason, RPSAP31 should not be used as a synonym or substitute for the canonical RPSA gene or the protein it encodes.
