Overview

RPSAP36 (ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 36) is classified as a non-functional gene copy related to the ribosomal protein SA (RPSA) gene family. Pseudogenes are genetic sequences similar to functional genes but lack the ability to encode active proteins due to mutations such as frameshifts, premature stop codons, or missing regulatory elements. While some RPSA pseudogenes in other species have been studied for potential regulatory roles, there is no evidence that RPSAP36 in humans is functional or involved in any therapeutic pathway[5]. The canonical functional gene (RPSA) encodes a ribosomal protein, also acting as a cell surface receptor (laminin receptor), with roles in cancer and infectious disease[7].
